alcatraz: this is one touristy thing that we totally recommend. it's really pretty cool. you get to take a ferry that gives you sweeping views of the entire bay area. they have a great automated tour full of interesting stories of the the prisoners. i mean a jail on a rock is pretty cool in my mind. this one is important to plan in advance as tickets tend to sell out. if you didn't plan in advance not to worry. you can usually get tickets from one of the tour bus companies when you buy a pass.
the bay lights: these are awesome. grab a hot chocolate and plop yourself on a bench along the embarcadero one night and just watch. there is a map of the best viewing spots on their website.
baker beach: this is our favorite beach in the city. it's beautiful. it also gives you one of the coolest views of the golden gate bridge. there are usually a few nudist that hang out by the rocks on the right end but it's nothing too bad. just a few crusty old men.
saturday morning farmers market at the ferry building: we have spent many a saturday morning here. its a big farmers market full of pretty flowers and produce. local eateries set up shop their too. the inside is full of even more food and some small little shops sprinkled throughout.
rent a scooter: this is the best way to get around the city. you can park anywhere and bypass the traffic. this is an easy way to see multiple neighborhoods in an hour or two. go see haight ashbury, go down lumbard and up hyde street, lookout the top of twin peaks, even across the bridge. there are no limits with a scooter.
picnic in dolores park: this park is surrounded by good food. take your pick! go to the top of the park. it's warmer up there and that's where the view is.
what not to do: don't do fisherman's wharf. that place makes me hate san francisco. seriously. i get terribly grumpy whenever i am down there. it's really crowded and there really isn't much down there besides the water. there are other places to see the water. and the sea lions aren't even there half the time. but alas, i understand if you feel like you need to go there. but when you get grumpy, don't hate on san francisco.
